Difference between PIR Aluminum Slugs and PCR Aluminum Slugs

  1. Difference in origin:
    • PIR Aluminum Slugs: are derived from aluminum scrap produced during the industrial production process. These scrap materials are usually the trimmings or waste materials generated during the production of aluminum products, which are recycled, cleaned and treated before being put back into production for use.
    • PCR Aluminum Slugs: come from aluminum products that are recycled after use by consumers, such as beverage cans, food cans, etc. PCR blocks typically contain more externally recycled aluminum material, and therefore are more widely available and may contain more impurities.
  2. Processing and purity:
    • PIR aluminum slugs typically contain higher aluminum purity because these scrap materials are more centrally sourced and processed in a relatively simple manner with fewer impurities.
    • PCR aluminum slugs, after multiple rounds of recycling, may contain more impurities and may require more refining and purification during the recycling process to meet the requirements of aluminum product manufacturing.
  3. Environmental Benefits:
    • Both offer significant environmental benefits, particularly in terms of reducing the demand for primary aluminum and lowering carbon emissions. PIR aluminum slugs have a slight edge in environmental performance because they are derived from industrial scrap and can typically consume less energy than the recycling process for PCR aluminum slugs.
